Pencarrow Run Date Change
From: Bob Welsh
Hi Folks,
Just an update on the Pencarrow Half marathon, 10km and 5km.
We set and advertised the date as 19 April way back before any other dates were in the calendar, we checked as best we could and knew that the only other event in Wellington, as in 2008, is the Moonshine Half. This event is normally in the first part of April so this year we held the same weekend as last year to avoid it. On or around Xmas Moonshine came out with their event date and it was the same as ours. We have contacted the organisers and pointed out the clash and as we have been advertising for some time asked them to move but they do not want to change so in fairness to those who want to race both events we decided to move the Pencarrow event back to May 10.
Anyone on our mailing list that does the Pencarrow Half marathon that wishes to do the 5 Bridges Marathon in August which follows the Hutt River trail will get a $5 refund on the marathon and half marathon entries.
Sorry for the hassle.
Best Wishes
Bob & Mike

City Safari Entries Open
This has got to be one of the best fun events around. Good for the family and the hard core amongst you.
From: Michael Wood
The region’s biggest rogaine takes place right here in town!
The City Safari takes place round Wellington. 6 hours for the hardened criminals. Like Ridgerunners Greg Thurlow and Andy Foster who last year beat the world rogaine and adventure racing champions by a nose. 3 hours for the less serious, family groups, students.
And the point of difference, the playing field is not level. You can use public transport. Go Wellington buses, Cablecar, Tranz Metro, East by West ferry. Just as much strategy as in a bush rogaine, it just involves different issues.
It’s an Orienteering Hutt Valley event (NZ’s rogaine pioneer.) Entry forms are on the website www.citysafari.org.nz. Dennis de Monchy is only world rogaine No. 2 now but he’ll be back. (Just won open men in the St James ultra run.) World Mixed Junior champions Georgia Whitla and Tim Farrant. At the other end you’ll find kids on scooters, babies in backpacks. In between you might find 40 kids from Te Puke Intermediate, Steve Gurney dressed as a cow, goodness knows what.
Sunday 17 May. Download the entry form now.

Wellington Winter Duathlon Series
From: Bob Welsh
2009 Duathlon Winter Series
Hi All, Now that summer has (almost) come to a close we thought we should remind you of what the winter has to offer.
From May we will again be having the Winter Duathlon Series. Five races, one each month, with a break in August so we can organise the 5 Bridges Marathon. Same courses as previous years with three duathlon distances and events specifically for juniors.
On 19 July in association with the Wellington Triathlon and Multisport Club we will host the Wellington Duathlon Championships over the Standard distance, we will also include a Junior Championship. The Coast Road and Catchpool entrance to the Rimutaka Forest Park will provide a superb course for the championship.
Online entries are now being accepted and paper entries will soon be in the shops/fitness clubs.
We look forward to seeing you at the events.
Best Wishes
Bob & Mike

2010 National Rogaine Championships
From: Mike Sheridan
Yep I can now report that Orienteering Hutt Valley has been awarded the NZ Rogaining Championships for next year. I have put my hand up to lead the charge on this, and many of you have said you are keen to help out with some aspects of it…so I would like to get a bit of an organising group together to plan our attack.
There are many roles involved in such an event – obviously the field work and mapping, but also lots of other stuff to make it all fit together…publicity, finances, entries, a web site, catering, admin before during and after….There are probably only a couple of roles that would exclude you from entering the event, so you can still help and take part. If you are keen to get involved in event management this is a great opportunity to learn how things work.
The other important thing next year is that the World Champs are also in NZ, so we see our NZ Champs as a vital part of the build up to that.
So in the first instance if you are keen to be part of this exceptional organising group of talented, committed, enthusiastic and fun people, then let me know by return email. Then I can organise a bit of a planning meeting over a beer.
Call me or email me if you would like any more info before confirming your availability.
