Crazyman Paddler Wanted

From: Nick Warring

Hi Shane

Our Crazyman team this year has come up short of a kayaker at late notice. Someone suggested I drop you a line to see if you know anyone amongst your fellow paddlers who might be up for a splash on Saturday but don’t have a team.

We placed second in the open men’s competition last year so looking for a good keen man (or woman for that matter).

Entry fee is $50, race is this Saturday 7:30am start.

Bit of a long shot but let me know if you have any suggestions.

Cheers

Nick Warring

Mukamuka Munter.

Race date is 23rd May. We did a recce trip last Saturday. Thanks all those that did come along on Saturday. For the record the times that I know of were:

–           Mary / Mark / Hamish etc. 4 hours 30 including a quick trip over Middle Ridge on the way back.

–           Heather / Tristine / Iain. 5 hours 20 with a leisurely walk along the river

–           Shane / Nigel (backpacks and a determined focus to walk and not run) 5 hours 20

Everyone was out by 5pm.

The course is in good nick – by that I mean it is hard. There is a need to place some bunting out as track markers and we will definitely need marshals at each of the Mukamuka entrance and potentially at the South Saddle and well as the entrance to the Orongorongo River.

The next recce trip will be Saturday 9th May if you are keen. Let me know.

If you can marshal on the day please let me know also.

Hi Shane. You don’t know me, but I’m a friend of Glen Warner.

I’ve done some analysis on the relative difficulty of a number of New Zealand mountain and trail races.  Given your association with the Mukamuka Munter I thought you might be interested to see the results.  For now the results are in a couple of facebook notes, but I’ll get the whole thing written up properly at some stage.

This note has an analysis of “difficulty”: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=72573272261&ref=mf

That note also links to another that predicts race times as a multiple of marathon times.

City Safari

From:  Michael Wood

Three weeks to the 2009 City Safari!

Entries so far include World #2 Rogainer Dennis de Monchy, and the current Mixed Junior champions Georgia Whitla and Tim Farrant. De Monchy and adventure racer Nathan Fa’avae were narrowly beaten in last year’s Safari, this year he will compete with his brother Pim. There will also be 40 intermediate students from Te Puke, in the capital for a school trip! An event for everyone.

Entries close on 7 May. Got your costumes sorted out? Previous info repeated below so you can flick this email on to friends/prospective team-mates!

BTW we need some help looking after some out of town teams that we have specially invited. Pick up from the airport on the Saturday, look after them Saturday night, get them to the event on Sunday and back to the airport after. Let me know if you can help.

Best regards, Michael Wood

Kayak Wanted

Much appreciate the help – very useful information thanks.

I’ve done some paddling in an Intrigue and also an Eclipse.  I’m probably in the market for a Total Eclipse or similar level.  If you could please put that out in your next email, it would be much appreciated.  I’m 1.82 tall and weigh (competition weight) about 80kg.

Many thanks and kind regards,

Racing Double Needed for Rollos

From: Dean Ford

Hi Shane,

Could you include the following in your next multisport email.

Cam Durno and I want to hire a racing double for this year’s Rollos Adventure Race. Does anyone have a boat they would be willing to hire?

The race is on the Saturday and Sunday of Queen’s Birthday weekend (30th May – 1st June). Although details are obviously yet to be released, this year’s race is based in St Arnaud. As such, the kayaking will almost certainly be on Lake Rotoiti, so there will be no river paddling. We’ll be taking my Hilux, which has three roof racks and is well suited to taking boats on windy days. And of course, any boat that I do hire would be treated like my own – which for anyone who has seen my Sharp is pretty darn well!!!

We’d love to hear from anyone who has a boat for hire that weekend.

Liam Racing in Australia

From: Liam Drew

Next week is the 3rd running of the Keen adventure race

http://www.keenadventurerace.com/, and my 3rd partner for it ;-)

This time it’s Rachel, so hopefully she won’t break like Bruce did the first year, and I won’t have any mechanicals like I did last year

There should be updates on the keen site from Tuesday ( Prologue ) if you’re interested.

See you when we get back!

Kayak For Sale – Proceeds to Charity

From: Hamish Abbie

I acquired this river racing kayak when I was training for Coast to Coast, however I never used it. I have decided to put it up for auction, with the hope that someone who enjoys a kayaking challenge will put it to good use. Any proceeds from this auction will go to the Sam Trust Cancer Charity.

The kayak is in fair condition but could do with a tidy up. It has a high trend factor being bright orange – a colour that is apparently in right now! To view the auction go to – http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=214420537

Rogaine Tuesday 28th April

From: wellingtonridgerunners@yahoogroups.com [mailto:wellingtonridgerunners@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Mike Sheridan

Rogaine details next week

Start finish details have been released for the St Pats Rogaine scheduled for next Tuesday 28th.  The event is controlled by experienced pair – Sue Eastwood and Graeme Silcock.  The following note from Graeme:

Start Point will be under the Silverstream Bridge – exit SH2 at Silverstream, turn right at the first roundabout and right into the car park after going under the railway bridge.

Start time is 6:30, maps 6:00pm

Mountain bikes are allowed but more than half the controls will be off track so some walking will be required – several tracks are not suitable for bikes – bikes are unlikely to be any real advantage

The course is 95% forest with some riverbank and very little road.

Navigation will be more difficult than most recent events but we hope not too difficult

Many tracks are steep and slippery

Compass and a good reliable torch will be essential

Email me to reserve your map.

Portage Kayak Race – 16th May

Yo Shane

Being a veteran of the picton portage race (I surprisingly have completed 2 now ;) I got this email from Andrea. There might be some adventurous types out there that might be interested in the Picton Portage race, if you can pass it on in your Better than TV news letter.

For those who are curious as to what the Picton Portage race is all about – here is my unbiased (yeah – right) web blog of last years effort:

Hi there

If you receive this it’s because you have previously competed in one our club’s kayak races. Thanks for supporting us and here’s some info on our next race for you to contemplate:

The Marlborough Sounds Portage Kayak race is on the 16th May – that gives you 4 weeks to hone your fitness and skills and join us for what has become a bit of an iconic race/adventure. 27km (ish) of paddling in two different waterways in The Sounds and about 4-5 km of portaging ( how else do you get a kayak from one sound to the other?!) Great fun, and a real sense of achievement when you paddle back into Picton Harbour.

Hope to see some of you again on May 16th

Cheers

Andrea
